British West Africa, formerly the British possessions in western Africa. By 1965 all had become independent or merged with other countries. The possessions were: Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Gold Coast (Ghana), British Togoland (part of Ghana), British Cameroons (divided between Cameroon and Nigeria), and Gambia.
