Geography of Abidjan
Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, the nation's largest city and chief port. It is the seat of government but not the official capital. The city lies on Ebrié Lagoon, an inlet of the Gulf of Guinea. Abidjan is the country's leading commercial, industrial, and transportation center. Industries include oil refining, textile milling, food processing, and automobile assembling. The University of Abidjan and a national museum of art and ethnology are here. The city first gained importance after 1903 as the southern terminus of the nation's only railway. Completion in 1950 of the Vridi Canal, which enables deep-draft vessels to enter the harbor of Abidjan, contributed greatly to the city's growth.
