Antananarivo, formerly Tananarive, Madagascar, the nation's capital and largest city. About 1,300,000 people live in the city. It lies high on a plateau in the central part of the country. Antananarivo is Madagascar's center of commerce and manufacturing. A railway connects the city with the port of Tamatave. Madagascar's only university is in Antananarivo.
Antananarivo was founded in the early 1600's as a walled citadel and became the residence of the Merina kings late in the 1700's. The city was captured by the French in 1895. It became the capital when Madagascar was granted independence in 1960.
