Dakar, Senegal, the nation's capital. Dakar is a port located on Cape Verde peninsula, the westernmost part of Africa. Dakar has railway connections with the interior of the continent and is an important international air and maritime center. The chief industry is food processing. Exports include peanuts, gum arabic, and phosphates.

Dakar was founded in 1857 and became the capital of French West Africa in 1902. In 1958 it became the capital of Senegal. In 1960 Senegal and French Sudan gained independence from France and formed the Mali Federation with Dakar as the capital. Later that year Senegal left the federation, and Dakar became the capital of Senegal.
