Kimberley, South Africa, a city in Northern Cape Province. Kimberley is near the Vaal River, about 280 miles (450 km) southwest of Johannesburg. The city is noted for the mining and production of diamonds. It also has other industries and is a rail and market center for a stock-raising region.

Kimberley was founded in 1871 as a shanty mining town soon after diamonds were discovered on nearby farms. During the Boer War, Kimberley was besieged by the Boers in the fall and winter of 1899-1900.
