Lusaka, Zambia, the nation's capital and largest city. It lies in south-central Zambia on the railway that crosses the country from Zimbabwe to Democratic Republic of the Congo. Lusaka is a commercial and industrial center and the seat of the national university. Products include motor vehicles, fertilizer, textiles, and foods. Lusaka was founded as a trading post in the early 1900's and became the capital of British Northern Rhodesia in 1935 and of independent Zambia in 1964.
