Oran, Algeria, the capital of Oran Department. The city is a port on the Mediterranean Sea, 230 miles (370 km) west-southwest of Algiers. At Oran are foundries, canneries, and metal and glass works. Wine, wheat, meat, wool, and fruit are exported.
Oran was founded by Moorish traders in the 10th century. It was held by Spain during most of the period between 1509 and 1791. In 1831 the city was taken by the French, under whom it was developed as a naval base. During World War II Oran was held by the French Vichy government until it fell to the Allies in 1942.
