Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, the nation's capital and largest city. It is also the commercial center and transportation hub of the nation. Manufactured products consist mainly of handicrafts, foods, and beverages. An international airport serves the city.
Ouagadougou was probably founded in the 12th century and was long the center of a kingdom established by the Mossi people. The royal palace is the city's chief attraction. Ouagadougou was ruled by the French from 1896 until 1960, when Burkina Faso gained independence.
