Port Sudan, Sudan, a city and a port on the Red Sea, some 420 miles (680 km) northeast of Khartoum, Sudan's capital. Port Sudan is the eastern terminus of the Sudanese railway system and handles nearly all of the nation's foreign trade. It was founded shortly after 1900 to replace Suakin, an old Arab port a few miles to the south, which could accommodate only small vessels.
