Spanish Morocco, a former protectorate in northern Morocco held by Spain, 1912–56. It consisted approximately of the Rif, the mountainous Mediterranean coastal area. Included in it were the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, which had been held by Spain prior to the establishment of the protectorate and were retained by that country when the protectorate was dissolved.
