Springs, South Africa, a city in Gauteng Province, about 25 miles (40 km) east-southeast of Johannesburg. It lies some 5,300 feet (1,615 m) above sea level and is especially known as a gold-mining center. Springs is also a coal-mining center and a significant industrial city, producing machinery, glass, alloy steels, and paper.
