Windhoek, Namibia, the national capital. It lies in the central part of the country in a cattle-raising region and is an important marketing center, especially for karakul sheep pelts. Industries include brewing, meat canning, and the making of clothing. Windhoek was settled by Germans in 1890. It became the capital of German South-West Africa in 1892 and of South-West Africa (Namibia) after World War I when the region was mandated to South Africa. It became the national capital when Namibia received independence in 1990.
