Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Kilimanjaro is an inactive volcano with twin summits. It is located in Tanzania, near the Kenya border. Kibo, the higher summit, rises to 19,340 feet (5,895 m) above sea level. The peak is always covered with snow and ice, despite of the mountain's closeness to the Equator. Mawenzi, the other peak, reaches about 17,300 feet (5,273 m). The mountain is heavily settled to a height of about 6,000 feet (1,800 m).
Kilimanjaro was first seen by Europeans in 1848, and first scaled in 1889 by Germans. It is not difficult to climb, and tourists regularly are taken to the top. Kilimanjaro is an impressive sight not only because of its height, but because there are no other mountains in the area. It forms a backdrop for Ernest Hemingway's short story “The Snows of Kilimanjaro.”
