It lies on the east coast of the island of Honshu at the head of Tokyo Bay, some 50 miles (80 km) from the Pacific Ocean. Officially it is called Tokyo Metropolis and consists of 23 wards (the city proper), several counties, numerous satellite cities and towns, and rural areas. Tokyo is one of the 47 major administrative divisions of Japan.
