Xuzhou, also Suchow or, a city in Jiangsu province, China. It is about 325 miles (523 km) northwest of Shanghai. Xuzhou is a major railway junction and a port on the Grand Canal. It is the trading center for the surrounding agricultural area, which produces wheat, cotton, and peanuts. Industries include food processing, textile manufacturing, and metal-working. Coal and iron ore are mined nearby. Although a long-established trading center, Xuzhou remained a small city until the building of railways in the early 1900's. A major battle in the Chinese civil war was fought here in November, 1948.
