Indian Subcontinent, a geographical name for the plain and plateau region south of the Himalayas and adjoining mountain ranges in southern Asia. It is called a “subcontinent” because of its size and its isolation from the rest of Asia due to the mountain ranges. The region is politically divided between three countries—India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
