Malacca, Strait of, a channel about 500 miles (800 km) long, between the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. It links the Andaman Sea and South China Sea and is a major international shipping lane. Ports on the strait include Singapore and the Malaysian cities of George Town and Malacca.
