Charlotte Amalie, Virgin Islands, the capital and largest city of the Virgin Islands of the United States. The city is a seaport on St. Thomas Island and was called St. Thomas from 1921 to 1937. It has shipyards and machine shops and is a fueling station for ships. It is a popular tourist resort and the site of the University of the Virgin Islands. Products include bay rum, rum, and handicrafts. The town was established in 1672 by Danish colonists who named it in honor of the wife of their king, Christian V.
