Pelican Island, a national refuge for pelicans, in the Indian River off the east-central coast of Florida. The three-acre (1.2-hectare) island is used as a nesting place by brown pelicans, as well as herons and egrets. Established in 1903, Pelican Island is the oldest national wildlife refuge in the United States.
