Santiago, or Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, the capital of Santiago province. It is situated on a high bluff overlooking the Rio Yaque del Norte, about 25 miles (40 km) from the north coast. Santiago is the commercial and industrial center for the fertile Cibao region, the republic's most productive agricultural area. The city has three universities.
Santiago was settled by Spaniards in 1500. A decisive battle for Dominican independence was fought here in 1844.
