Bayreuth, Germany, a city on the Roter Main River in northeastern Bavaria. It is 41 miles (66 km) northeast of Nuremberg. The composer Richard Wagner lived here (1872–83) and established a theater in which to produce his operas. An annual Wagner festival is held here in July and August. It is one of the major musical events of Europe. Bayreuth was founded in 1194 and chartered as a city in 1231.
