Birkenhead, England, a city on the Wirral peninsula across the Mersey River from Liverpool. Highway and railway tunnels run under the river to Liverpool. From the mid-1820's until the early 1990's, Birkenhead was a major shipbuilding center. The Confederate cruiser Alabama was built here in 1862. Today the city's economy is based on commerce and the production of clothing, flour, and processed foods.
