Brno (formerly Br√ľnn), Czech Republic, the nation's second largest city and the capital of Jihomoravsk√Ĺ region. The city is at the junction of the Svratka and Svitava rivers, 115 miles (185 km) southeast of Prague. Industrial products include textiles, metal goods, machinery, and chemicals. Brno is the seat of a university and a technical college. Near the city is Spielberg fortress, which was once an Austrian prison. Brno was founded in the ninth century. The large German population was expelled after World War II.
