Hastings, England, a residential and resort town in East Sussex. It is on the English Channel, 54 miles (87 km) southeast of central London. Hastings grew as one of the original Cinque Ports. William the Conqueror camped here in 1066 before the Battle of Hastings, fought seven miles (11 km) northwest. He may have built the castle whose ruins overlook the town.
