Krivoy Rog, Ukraine, a city in the south-central part of the country. It lies within the great bend of the Dnieper River, north of the Black Sea. Krivoy Rog is the center of Ukraine's iron-ore mining region. Part of the ore is used by the city's large iron and steel industry; most is shipped eastward to the heavily industrialized Donets Basin. Educational institutions include a mining institute.
Krivoy Rog was founded by Cossacks in the 17th century. Industrial development has come mainly since the 1880's, mostly under the Soviets. Much damage was inflicted by the Germans during World War II.
