Nottingham, England, a city in Nottinghamshire. Nottingham is near the Trent River, 109 miles (175 km) north-northwest of London. Products include lace, hosiery, drugs, tobacco, machinery, and bicycles. Nottingham University is here. Nottingham Castle, now a museum, was built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. The castle and nearby Sherwood Forest figure in the legends of Robin Hood. A nearby district known as The Dukeries contains mansions and parks of British nobility.
Anglo-Saxons settled in Nottingham in the ninth century. In the late 18th century Richard Arkwright introduced the first spinning frame, and James Hargreaves set up his original spinning jenny, in Nottingham.
