Odense, Denmark, a city and seaport on the island of Fyn, about 85 miles (135 km) west-southwest of Copenhagen. A ship canal links the city with Odense Fjord, which leads to the open sea. Major industries include shipbuilding and the making of heavy electrical machinery. The University of Odense was founded here in 1964. Dating from the 10th century, Odense is one of the oldest cities in Denmark. Hans Christian Andersen was born here.
