Wuppertal, Germany, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia state. It lies in the highly industrialized Ruhr region, on the Wupper River, about 40 miles (64 km) north of Bonn. Manufacturing, especially of textiles and machinery, is the main economic activity. An 8-mile (13-km) monorail system, opened in 1901, follows the river. It was the first monorail ever built. Wuppertal was formed in 1929 by incorporating Elberfeld and Barmen, which were founded in the Middle Ages, and four other communities.
