Maggiore, Lake, (Italian:Lago Maggiore, also Lago Verbano), a lake in northern Italy and southern Switzerland. It lies at the edge of the Alps, mostly in Italy, and is famed for its great natural beauty. The lake is about 40 miles (64 km) long, averages two miles (3 km) in width, and has an area of 82 square miles (212 km2).
Steeply rising mountain slopes, picturesque resort towns, and handsome villas and gardens make the shore of the lake a major tourist attraction. Among the more popular centers are Locarno, Switzerland, and the Verbania-Stresa-Borromean Islands area in Italy.
