Hermosillo, Mexico, the capital of Sonora state. It is on the Río Sonora in northwestern Mexico, about 60 miles (100 km) east of the Gulf of California. Hermosillo is a regional trade center and a processing point for irrigated crops grown in the area. It is also a winter resort. The University of Sonora is here.
Hermosillo began as a fortified Spanish settlement in 1742. It was given its present name in 1828, honoring José María Gonzáles Hermosillo, a patriot in the war for Mexican independence. The city became the capital of Sonora state in 1829.
