, a mountainous region in northern Israel. It extends west from the River Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea, and south from Lebanon to the plains just north of northwestern Jordan. The Sea of Galilee lies at the region's eastern edge. Most of this area was included in the Roman province of Galilee, in northern Palestine. Jesus spent most of his childhood in Galilee and later carried out much of his ministry here.
