Asyut, Egypt, a city on the Nile River, about 195 miles (314 km) south of Cairo. Asyut is the chief city and commercial center of Upper (southern) Egypt. Besides handicrafts and agricultural processing industries, the city has shoe, clothing, and chemical manufacturing. Asyut University is here. Nearby is Asyut Barrage, a dam that diverts water for irrigation and helps regulate the flow of the Nile.
