, a town about I5 miles (24 km) northeast of Jerusalem. Although it is in Israeli-occupied Jordan, it is governed as an autonomous entity, by the Palestine Liberation Organization. Near the modern city, archeologists have uncovered remains of the ancient walled city of Jericho. It was the first Ca-naanite city conquered by the Israelites after their exodus from Egypt. The story of Jericho's conquest is told in the Bible, in Joshua 6:1–21.
