British Indian Ocean Territory, a British dependency in the Indian Ocean. It consists of the Chagos Archipelago, some 1,200 miles (1,900 km) south-southwest of India. The island of Diego Garcia is the site of an Anglo-American naval base. The total area of the archipelago is about 23 square miles (60 km2).
