Johnston Atoll, a United States dependency in the central Pacific Ocean, about 825 miles (1,325 km) southwest of Honolulu, Hawaii. Two small islets, Johnston and Sand, are inside the coral reef. Johnston Atoll was claimed by the United States in 1858. It was the site of an air base during World War II and of high-altitude nuclear tests in 1958 and 1962.
