Chimborazo, an inactive, snowcapped volcano in the Andes Mountains of central Ecuador. With an altitude of 20,702 feet (6,310 m), it is Ecuador's highest peak. Chimborazo is visible from Quito, the capital, 90 miles (145 km) to the north. Simón Bolívar is said to have reached the summit, but Edward Whymper made the first verified ascent in 1880.
