Callao, Peru, a city and a port on the Pacific Ocean. An excellent harbor on Callao Bay makes Callao the main shipping center for Peru's foreign trade. Among the leading industries are flour milling, brewing, and meat packing. Callao was founded in 1537. It was destroyed by a tidal wave in 1746 and then rebuilt. The city suffered a severe earthquake in 1940.
