Medellín, Colombia, the nation's second largest city and the capital of Antioquia department. It is in the Porce River valley in the Andes, in west-central Colombia. Medellín is an industrial city, known especially for the manufacturing of textiles. During the 1980's and early 1990's the city was a major center for the narcotics trade. Medellín is served by an international airport, a branch of the Pan American Highway, and Colombia's main railway. The University of Antioquia is the largest of several universities here. Also here are museums, a zoo, a botanic garden, and a bullring. Medellín was founded in 1674.
