Salta, Argentina, the capital of Salta province. It lies in northwestern Argentina near the foothills of the Andes. Sugar refining and meat packing are among the principal industries. Salta is one of Argentina's best-preserved colonial cities. Prominent buildings in the colonial style include the Cabildo (city hall), the cathedral, and the Church of San Francisco. Salta was founded by the Spanish in 1582.
