Santos, Brazil, a city and a major port serving the São Paulo area. Rail lines and a superhighway link Santos with São Paulo, 35 miles (56 km) inland. The port handles a large share of Brazil's foreign trade, especially coffee exports. Industrial activities include the refining of oil and the making of steel. The city is also the center of a resort area. Santos was founded in about 1532. It did not become an important city until the spread of coffee cultivation in the 19th century.
