Dalles, or Dells, rapids in a river where the water flows over slab-like rock in a narrow trough or gorge. French fur traders in North America gave the name to places where rapidly flowing streams had cut deep troughs in rock. Notable examples are The Dalles, Oregon, on the Columbia River; the Dells of the Wisconsin River; and the dalles of the St. Louis River in Minnesota.
