Sink, or Sinkhole, a funnel-shaped hollow in the earth's surface. Sinks are formed by the seepage of water in soluble rocks, such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. Usually they drain surface water into underground cavities. Some sinkholes, however, become blocked and form ponds or small lakes. Occasionally, a sinkhole is created by the collapse of a cavern ceiling.
