Dismal Swamp, also Great Dismal Swamp, a coastal swamp in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The swamp covers an area of approximately 600 square miles (1,550 km2); large areas have been drained and reclaimed for farming. Lake Drummond lies in the central part of the swamp. Dismal Swamp Canal, running north-south through the swamp, forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway.

Dismal Swamp was a hideout for escaped slaves before the Civil War. Much of Dismal Swamp was made a national wildlife refuge in the early 1970's.
