Bloomington, Illinois, the seat of McLean County, about 125 miles (200 km) southwest of Chicago. The city is a distribution center for farm products from the surrounding area. Coal is mined nearby. Manufacturing plants and insurance companies are among Bloomington's major employers. Illinois Wesleyan University is in Bloomington, and Illinois State University is in the adjoining city of Normal. The American Passion Play is presented every spring at Bloomington's Scottish Rite Temple. Bloomington was settled in 1822.
