Branson, Missouri, a city in Taney County, situated on Lake Taneycomo in the Ozark Mountains 175 miles (282 km) southwest of Jefferson City. Branson's economy is based on tourism generated by several theme parks, dozens of musical theaters, and fishing and camping in the surrounding areas.
Branson was incorporated in 1912, the year in which a dam was built on the White River, forming Lake Taneycomo. By the 1930's Branson was known for being an inexpensive resort area for fishing and camping. Country music venues first appeared in the 1970's; in the late 1980's and the 1990's the number and variety of venues greatly increased, drawing millions of tourists a year.
The College of the Ozarks is nearby. Also in the area is Silver Dollar City, a popular theme park.
