Bridgeport, Connecticut, one of the largest cities in the state. It is in Fairfield County on Long Island Sound, in the southwestern part of the state. Bridgeport is primarily a manufacturing city, producing diverse metal and electrical goods. Attractions include the P. T. Barnum Museum of circus memorabilia and the Discovery Museum. The city's largest educational institution is the University of Bridgeport.

Bridgeport was settled in 1639. The town of Bridgeport was incorporated in 1821, the city in 1836. Whaling and shipping were the first major economic activities; manufacturing became dominant with the coming of the railways in the 19th century. Bridgeport has the mayor-council form of government.
