Des Plaines, Illinois, a city in Cook County. It lies on the Des Plaines River, adjacent to O'Hare International Airport 18 miles (29 km) northwest of downtown Chicago. Des Plaines is a residential and industrial suburb. Its factories produce electronics equipment, chemicals, machine tools, and precision instruments. Excellent transportation facilities make it an important warehousing and distribution center. Des Plaines was founded in the 1830's.
