Elyria, Ohio, the seat of Lorain County. It is on the Black River, 8 miles (13 km) south of Lake Erie and 23 miles (37 km) west of downtown Cleveland. Elyria is an industrial city in an agricultural area. It produces automotive accessories, heating and air-conditioning equipment, machine tools, foundry products, plastics, and chemicals. Nearby are large sandstone quarries. Cascade Park is a tourist attraction. Elyria was named for Herman Ely, who settled here in 1817. Elyria was incorporated as a town in 1833 and chartered as a city in 1892.
