Escondido, California, a city in San Diego County, about 30 miles (48 km) north of downtown San Diego. Escondido lies in a rich agricultural area producing avocados, citrus fruit, and wine grapes. Manufactured products include electronic goods, medical and dental supplies, and radio and television equipment. Nearby is the San Diego Wild Animal Park, where thousands of African and Asian animals roam in open spaces. Escondido was founded in 1885 and incorporated in 1888. The city has the council-manager form of government.
