Fairmont, West Virginia, the seat of Marion County. It is on the Monongahela River, 110 miles (177 km) northeast of Charleston. Fairmont lies in the heart of an extensive soft-coal mining region. Glassware, electric lamps, and mining equipment are produced in the city. Fairmont State College is here.
Fairmont was founded in 1843 as a union of two earlier communities and was chartered as a city in 1899. It has the council-manager form of government.
